Window Replacement — During & After
From rotted framing to finished stucco — every stage documented.

What was found
Severely Rotted 2×6 Framing Hidden Behind the Stucco
When the old window was removed, the damage was significant. The 2×6 framing had rotted through from years of water infiltration — wood completely broken down, crumbling, dark, and structurally compromised. This is one of the most common hidden problems on Calgary stucco homes.
- Soft or spongy wall areas around window frames
- Stucco cracks radiating from window corners
- Staining or bubbling paint near frames
- Drafts through a fully closed window
Signs your window framing may be compromised:
Water infiltration through stucco is often invisible until the window is pulled. If your window feels loose, has interior condensation, or the stucco around it has cracked — it’s worth an inspection before water gets deeper into the wall assembly.
The repair process
Done Right From the Frame Out — 6 Steps
Step 1
Remove the Old Window and Rotted Framing
The existing window was removed and the rough opening fully exposed. All rotted 2×6 framing was cut out completely — no compromised wood left behind.
Step 2
New Structural 2×6 Framing Installed
Fresh 2×6 lumber rebuilt the rough opening — treated, square, properly supported, giving the new window a solid structural base.
Step 3
Waterproof Membrane at the Sill
New sill pan membrane installed — the drainage layer that ensures any incidental water exits the wall assembly rather than pooling on framing.
Step 4
3M Flashing Tape on Both Sides
3M flashing tape applied to both sides of the rough opening — continuous waterproof seal at the most vulnerable joints between frame and wall assembly.
Step 5
New Window Installed and Fully Sealed
The new arched window set, shimmed level and plumb, anchored, and sealed on all four sides. Tested for operation and inspected for gaps before exterior finish work began.
Step 6
Stucco Repair, Skim Coat & New Finish Coat
Surrounding stucco repaired, entire wall section skimmed, and new finish coat applied. No visible repair lines, no colour mismatch, no gaps.

Why it matters in Calgary
Calgary’s Climate Turns Small Leaks Into Structural Damage
Calgary temperatures swing from −30°C in January to +35°C in July. That range drives constant expansion and contraction in every exterior material. A window sealed correctly in 2005 may not be holding its seal today — sealants fail, flashing tape ages, and without a proper waterproofing assembly behind the frame, infiltration is a matter of when, not if.
